An initial consultation usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes and involves taking the history, performing a full clinical examination of your pet and the formulation and discussion of the initial treatment or diagnostic plan. Consultations are available by appointment during our normal opening hours.
Your pet’s current problem and previous history will be discussed during the first part of the consultation. This is a good time to let us know about all the health concerns you have for your pet. Sometimes, even things which seem insignificant can help us reach a diagnosis, so please feel free to discuss all your concerns with us. We try to allow plenty of time for this part of the consultation as we feel it is very important to get to know both you and your pet.
If you are coming to us for the first time and your pet has been treated by another vet previously, we will need obtain your pet’s clinical history before you arrive for your first consultation with us. Having all this information ahead of the initial consultation gives us time to evaluate it and helps to make our first discussions more meaningful. We will ask your previous vet to send us any clinical history which they have for your pet. Please provide us with contact details for your previous vet at the time of booking your appointment.
Once we have discussed your pet’s history and current problem(s), we will need to carefully examine your pet. This examination needs to be thorough and we will look at your pet from head to tail before taking an in-depth look at the problem in question. We understand that animals often need to be reassured at this stage and we take our time with them, performing the examination in a calm and gentle manner.
Once we have thoroughly assessed your pet we can start to formulate the initial treatment or diagnostic plan. This plan will include any recommendations for medication, surgery, further diagnostic procedures, diet, exercise, mental stimulation and rest as well as any appropriate complementary treatments or therapies. We will always ensure that we work together with you so that you are involved and happy with what we do for your pet.
At the end of the consultation you will be provided with medication or other products which have been recommended for your pet. We will arrange a convenient time with you for any surgery or further diagnostic tests to be carried out. Follow up appointments may be made if required at the time of payment.
If you have any queries following your appointment you are very welcome to contact us via e-mail, telephone or in person for further help or clarification. We aim to involve you fully in your pet’s care at all times and will always listen carefully to your points of view regarding any treatment or procedure.
