Herbal and Homeopathic Medicine
At MayfieldVet we can offer herbal and homeopathic treatments for pets alongside conventional veterinary care. Herbal preparations have many potential uses in veterinary care. This is hardly surprising when one considers the complex nature of the plant world. Many of the current drugs used in conventional veterinary medicine have originally come from plants. For example, digoxin comes from the Foxglove and vincristine from the Madagascar periwinkle.
In herbal medicine the whole plants, or parts of plants are used. Many active ingredients may therefore be present. This allows the body to utilise many different aspects of the plant's biochemistry in the healing process, rather than providing just one powerful and concentrated chemical. This tends to mean that herbal medicines, used correctly, are more gentle on the body with fewer side effects than conventional drugs. They also tend to work more slowly but are capable of working at a much deeper level than conventional medicines.
Homeopathy involves using active ingredients which have been diluted many, many times. Homeopathy tends to be very safe and can also be highly effective when used correctly. Remember that only vets can prescribe homeopathic treatments for animals.
There are not many vets at the moment who use homeopathic and herbal medicines in their practices, however if you live in the UK you might like to contact us. Since we use herbal and homeopathic medicines alongside conventional treatments - the aim being to find the most appropriate treatment for your pet and try to bring back an optimal state of health.
